French

At Chepping View, we have chosen French as our additional language within the curriculum as it supports the pupils when they transfer to secondary school.

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that pupils acquire, use and apply their knowledge of French through the progression of the three knowledge strands (pillars of language)

  • phonics
  • vocabulary and
  • grammar

The learning of each skill starts as structured, supported understanding (listening and reading) and meaningful production (speaking and writing), and gradually builds to freer production, in which learners recall and manipulate a wider range of language to communicate meaning.

What does it mean to get better at French?

  • Phonics – Pupils can accurately decode sound-symbol correspondence and can pronounce most words accurately from the written form, including those not yet explicitly taught. Pupils can use the produce a potentially accurate spelling of new words.
  • Vocabulary – Pupils recognise a broad range of words
  • Grammar – Pupils can understand how the words are ‘glued’ together with grammar
