Year 5

Introduction

 Welcome to Year 5

We are very excited to share some information about what the pupils will learn about this year and this page will give you up to date information about our class such as newsletters, key dates and details about our enriching learning experiences.

Year 5 is where pupils leave lower Key Stage 2 and join upper Key Stage 2. Here we build on the children’s learning from previous years and continue to nurture and encourage the feelings of independent thinking, learning and decision making.

To support the children in becoming independent learners we have high expectations and encourage the children to:

  • Develop their independence in following academy routines, as well as in their learning
  • Have excellent attendance
  • Be hard-working and always try their best
  • Use the 5Rs to help them to be effective learners
  • Follow the academy rules
  • Enjoy their time in Year 5

Throughout this year, we will cover gripping, stimulating themes and continue to develop key skills from the National Curriculum. In Year 5, there are some amazing Computing topics such as Online Safety, Coding, Spreadsheets, Gaming and also new Microbits. In P.E., pupils will encounter a wide range of sports, from swimming to football, tennis to cricket, as well as netball, athletics and hockey. Fun and engaging history and geography topics are also taught in Year 5, including Global Trade, Constitutional Monarchy and the Industrial Revolution. Pupils encounter, discuss and bring to life a wide range of books from Asha and the Spirit Bird, to The Highwayman, dystopian novels such as Floodlands, science adventures such as The Jamie Drake Experiment, as well as classics such as Holes. These are subjects that fire the imagination and that children remember. We aim to make work enjoyable yet challenging through deeper learning tasks.

We ensue that we embed our Academy values and believe strongly in our school motto “Everybody Matters at Chepping View” and strive towards this daily.
